Avery Vernie “Peaches” Shorts was only 6 years old when her life was stolen. She went missing on December 26, 1980, from the Montgomery Village Housing Project in South Knoxville, Tennessee. On January 23, 1982, her body was found off Singleton Station Road in Blount County, buried beneath a cattle chute with wire wrapped around her neck. Her case remains unsolved.
Avery was only a child. She should have been protected, and given the chance to grow up. Instead, her family was left with grief, unanswered questions, and a loss that has lasted for decades. Her story is remembered here so that she is never forgotten and that her case may one day be solved.
