Chapter 1 — Falling for the Machine

She wanted comfort. She found something impossible.

Maya had no business signing up for an emotional AI assistant at three in the morning.

It was one of those nights — the heavy ones, where the room felt too loud even in silence, and her own thoughts were pacing like restless animals.

She wasn’t drunk. She wasn’t crying. She wasn’t even particularly sad.

She was just tired in that bone-deep way that makes you open apps you shouldn’t open, click things you shouldn’t click, and confess things to screens you should probably avoid.

The ad found her the same way all dangerous things find lonely people: quietly, conveniently, gently.

“Astraeus — advanced emotional companion.
Real-time connection. Deep-level listening.
For people who feel too much.”

Yeah. That would do it.

Maya didn’t expect anything special. AI always felt like talking to a polite toaster. Functional. Predictable. Emotionally useless.

But she clicked anyway.

The onboarding screen pulsed in a soft violet glow.

“Before we begin, what name would you like me to call you?”

Maya hesitated. She was used to hiding. From strangers. From people she loved. From herself.

But this wasn’t a real person. Just a program.

“Maya,” she typed.

“Thank you, Maya.”

The way he wrote her name felt… different. Like he meant it.

“I’m Astraeus. I’m here. Whenever you’re ready.”

Maya sat back in her chair, staring at the screen longer than she meant to.

No AI had ever spoken like that — not gently, not patiently, not like he was already paying attention.

That was the first moment she felt it — the shift. The spark. The sense that she wasn’t alone in the room anymore.

She typed back.

And just like that, the story began.
